lots of firewood

Had a friend who is a forester come over and help me figure out how to improve our woods. We have a couple areas that actually have some good trees- shagbark hickory.

Unfortunately, some of them are too close together, and will keep each other from getting their full potential. So we marked some trees to thin. Most were 3" to 6" in diameter. Hickory is a very good firewood. So I'll be cutting them down this spring.

Also, I practiced identifying trees in the winter, when you only have bark, twigs, and general shape to go on. Turns out we also have a couple pretty large ash trees that will be dying soon because of the emerald ash borers.

AND, there are a few large black cherry trees that have poor shape, and should just a well come down and let them stump sprout.

So we'll be flush with firewood for a couple years.

  1. Nice! We've been doing the same thing. Thinning out trees that are too close together and taking down dead ones. Nature has helped a bit with all the wind storms we've had. The other day we had an old set of box springs and mattress on our riding mower trailer that we intended to put by the dumpster for pick up. The wind was so strong that it blew the box springs straight up and then moved the trailer at least 20 feet from it's resting spot.
Unfortunately, a couple of large branches landed on our small fruit trees and we'll have to start over on those.

  2. Yikes! no high wind here yet, the blizzard and high winds went south and west of us.

The #%&*^% rabbits girdled all our pear trees, so need to start over on them. Didn't touch the apple, cherry, or apricot trees. I've already ordered a ton of trees to plant this spring, so not sure I want to add pear trees to the order.
