Ok who all of y'all does a garden? We've had suburban yards with too much shade for many years, so I'm itching to get rolling at the Wisconsin place. I'm open to recommendations on successful varieties, and if you have a rototiller, comments on good makes and models to consider.
I've been gardening behind our pole barn for 4 years now. I really like to put several varieties of tomatoes and lettuce out to see what does best in my soil. Squash and zuchini really proliferate for some reason, but corn does so-so. I guess I'm saying that you have to try out your soil a bit before you know what works well. I still love the older varieties of basics for flavor. For example, I like good ole Rutgers canning tomatoes the best. I always put out cherry tomatoes and big boys, but for flavor you can't beat Rutgers. My favorite corn is the "Candy Corn" variety that is a white corn, but I like to mix with Silver Queen or a yellow corn and experiment with flavor. Last summer we the best tasting corn ever, but only got to eat one ear. Over night the coons cleaned us out. There were silks and shucks all over the back yard, even in the trees! Several times I saw a squirrel scampering back to the tree with a tomato in his mouth. Apparently they like variety in their diet. I don't know how to keep the coons out, so if anyone has an idea let me know! Get some horse or cow manure and till it in now....I don't know about good tillers- the one we have is my in-laws. Good Luck!!
